Lieutenant General Vadim Shamarin, deputy chief of the General Staff and head of the Main Directorate of Communications, has been arrested for allegedly taking a large bribe. Shamarin, 53, could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
His detention follows recent arrests of other senior defense officials on corruption charges. Shamarin’s predecessor, Khalil Arslanov, was also implicated in a major fraud case in 2020.
