In a landmark decision, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has abolished the majority of the controversial quotas in government jobs and educational institutions that have been the focal point of widespread and deadly unrest across the country.
Despite this significant move, students and activists continue their protests, demanding additional reforms including release of all jailed students and the criminal cases against police who involved in the killing of students.
The decision to scrap most quotas was announced on Sunday following a week long intense demonstrations that saw clashes with law enforcement, resulting in more than 140 people killed and hundreds injuries heightened tensions nationwide.
