In a significant development, Canadian authorities have arrested three individuals in connection with the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist activist. The arrests have brought to light a complex international narrative that has strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada.

The arrest of Indian hit squad in Canada is a major blow for Indian government who sponsored the killings of Sikh activist abroad.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and a prominent figure in the Khalistan movement, was fatally shot outside the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Surrey, B.C., on June 18, 2023. His death sparked controversy and diplomatic tension, with allegations of foreign government involvement.

On Friday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed the arrest of three Indian nationals, who are now facing charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The suspects, identified as Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh, were apprehended nearly a year after the incident.

The RCMP has revealed that the accused played various roles in the execution of the crime, including acting as shooters, drivers, and spotters. It is believed that the plot was hatched in Surrey and Edmonton between May 1, 2023, and June 18, 2023.

The case has led to a diplomatic feud between Canada and India, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last year citing “credible allegations” of a potential link to Indian agents in the killing. The Indian government has denied any involvement, but the incident has resulted in both nations expelling each other’s envoys.

The RCMP has stated that the investigation is still active, and there may be additional individuals involved. The case continues to be a matter of significant interest due to its implications on international relations and the safety of political activists in Canada.
