The 8th CAREC Think Tank Development Forum commenced today with a strong call to action from Mr. Kabir Jurazoda, the Director of the CAREC Institute. Addressing a diverse audience of policymakers, experts, and stakeholders, Mr. Jurazoda emphasized the critical need for regional cooperation in addressing the growing challenges posed by climate change.
In his welcome remarks, Mr. Jurazoda underscored the significant socio-economic and technological shifts taking place globally, alongside the pressing issue of accelerated climate change. He noted that the World Meteorological Organization reported that the last decade witnessed the 10 warmest years in recorded history. This alarming trend has resulted in severe weather events, including heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires, and tropical cyclones, which have caused widespread devastation and economic losses, particularly within the CAREC region.
The two-day forum, Mr. Jurazoda explained, is dedicated to exploring actionable solutions and cooperative strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change. He highlighted the pivotal role that think tanks can play in these efforts, particularly in providing research-driven insights and fostering collaboration among regional stakeholders.
The forum’s agenda includes a comprehensive review of global climate initiatives such as the Paris Agreement, the Global Environment Facility, and the Green Climate Fund. These multilateral platforms are essential, Mr. Jurazoda noted, for aiding regional efforts in climate change mitigation.
Participants will also engage in discussions comparing climate strategies across various Asian sub-regions, including ASEAN, the Greater Mekong Subregion, and the CAREC region. These sessions aim to facilitate the sharing of best practices and the development of region-specific solutions.
A key highlight of the forum is the presentation of findings from research papers funded by the CAREC Think Tank Network (CTTN) Research Grants Program. Mr. Jurazoda stressed that this session would not only provide valuable insights but also strengthen collaborative research efforts among CAREC think tanks.
In addition to discussing strategies, the forum will address the crucial issue of financing. Mr. Jurazoda pointed out that effective climate action requires increased development finance, greater private climate investment, and the adjustment of fiscal and subsidy policies within CAREC countries. One session will focus specifically on these financial aspects, emphasizing the need for sustainable funding mechanisms.
As the forum progresses, discussions will also turn to the challenges faced by think tanks, including regulatory hurdles, stakeholder management, and the need for institutional growth. The forum will conclude with a report on the progress made by the CAREC think-tank network and proposals for future collaborations.
