China slams AUKUS submarine deal as “dangerous and wrong”

China has denounced the nuclear-powered submarine deal between Australia, the UK and the US, saying it is a “path of error and danger” that will trigger an arms race, violate the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and endanger regional peace and stability.

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Tuesday that the three countries were disregarding the concerns of the international community and pursuing their own geopolitical interests with the deal, which he called a “typical case of Cold War mentality”.

He also accused them of having a “double standard” and “coercing” the International Atomic Energy Agency into endorsing the deal . The deal, known as AUKUS, was announced in September 2021 and detailed on Monday during a meeting of AUKUS leaders in San Diego.
