In a significant move to bolster economic relations between China and the United States, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk and other prominent US business leaders in Washington. The meeting, which took place ahead of Monday’s presidential inauguration, was aimed at discussing future economic ties and encouraging deeper US investment in China.
During the talks, Han Zheng emphasized the mutual benefits of increased economic cooperation and urged US businesses to “take root” in China. He highlighted the potential for these companies to play a crucial role in stabilizing bilateral relations.
Elon Musk, who leads Tesla, a company with significant operations in China, reportedly welcomed Han’s invitation. He indicated that Tesla would be willing to deepen its investment cooperation with China, aiming to play an active part in advancing economic and trade exchanges between the two nations.
This meeting comes at a time when there has been considerable tension over technology, trade, and investment between the two economic giants. However, the discussions reflect a desire from Beijing to maintain and possibly enhance the economic linkage with US corporations despite geopolitical frictions.
The dialogue also included representatives from the US-China Business Council and the American Chamber of Commerce, indicating a broad engagement with the American business community.
