China’s tourism sector is expected to see a strong recovery in 2024, with domestic trips surpassing 6 billion and international trips exceeding 260 million, according to a report released by the China Tourism Academy on Friday.

The report, which reviews the tourism performance in 2023 and forecasts the trends for 2024, shows that domestic tourism in China bounced back to over 80 percent of the pre-pandemic level in 2023, with more than 100 percent year-on-year growth in both revenue and number of tourists.

Inbound and outbound international tourism also witnessed a significant rebound, with the total number of tourists reaching over 190 million, up more than 280 percent from the previous year.

The report also predicts that the tourism market will continue to grow in 2024, driven by the increasing income, consumption, and mobility of Chinese residents, as well as the improvement of the global health situation and the easing of travel restrictions.

The report suggests that the tourism sector should seize the opportunities and address the challenges in 2024, such as enhancing the quality and safety of tourism services, promoting the digital transformation and innovation of tourism products, and strengthening the cooperation and communication with the international tourism community.
