Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City, has emerged as the frontrunner to be the presidential candidate of the ruling leftist party in the 2024 election, according to several polls published on Tuesday. Sheinbaum, a close ally of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has a clear advantage over her main rival, Marcelo Ebrard, the former foreign minister.
The polls were conducted using the same methodology chosen by the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) to select its nominee, which will be announced on Wednesday. The method consists of a national survey that gives a 75% weight to the question of who is the preferred choice among party members and supporters, and a 25% weight to five questions related to honesty, proximity to the people, knowledge of the country, keeping one’s word, and favorability.
