Deadly blast at political party’s meeting in Pakistan’s kills 40

A powerful bomb explosion at a workers’ convention of the hardline Islamic political party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) in Khar, Bajaur tribal district, Pakistan, resulted in the death of at least 40 people and left over 80 others injured on Sunday, police and local media reported.

The death toll may rise, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The JUI-F is one of the major political parties in Pakistan, with a conservative and religious ideology and a strong base in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The attack has raised concerns over the security situation in Pakistan ahead of the elections.
