A former member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses killed seven people, including an unborn child, and then himself during a rampage in Hamburg, Germany on Thursday night.

The gunman stormed a service at his former Jehovah’s Witness hall in the Gross Borstel district around 9 p.m. local time while an event was ongoing at the church. He shot six people, four men and two women, one of whom was pregnant, before taking his own life when police arrived minutes later. The motive for the attack is unclear and police are investigating.

The perpetrator and the victims were all German citizens. The shooting has shocked the city and the country, as Germany has strict gun laws and mass shootings are rare.
