Slovakia has rejected Brussels’ proposal to add nuclear fuel supplies to the upcoming round of penalties against Russia over its military intervention in Ukraine. The Slovakian government said that such a move would jeopardize its own energy security and harm its economy.

The EU has been considering imposing new sanctions on Russia. The sanctions would target key sectors of the Russian economy, such as energy, finance, and defense. One of the proposed measures was to ban the export of nuclear fuel and technology to Russia, which relies on nuclear power for about 20% of its electricity generation.

However, Slovakia, which is a member of the EU and NATO, has opposed this idea, arguing that it would also affect its own nuclear industry.
