In a significant escalation of tensions, protesting farmers in Warsaw clashed with police forces outside the parliament building. The demonstrations turned volatile as police resorted to using pepper spray against the protestors, who were voicing their dissent against the unregulated import of agricultural products from Ukraine and the European Union’s Green Deal policies.
The protests, which saw thousands of farmers gather, led to more than 20 individuals being detained by the police. The farmers’ grievances are rooted in the impact of these imports and policies on their livelihoods, with many demanding a withdrawal from the EU’s Green Deal and a closure of the Polish-Ukrainian border to Ukrainian food products.
