French Prime Minister François Bayrou set the tone for the discussion, condemning the Trump-Zelenskyy meeting as “a stunning scene marked by brutality, and a desire to humiliate.” Bayrou’s remarks referenced the fallout from the Oval Office clash, where Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelenskyy for perceived ingratitude toward U.S. support, leading to the cancellation of a planned minerals agreement. The incident has reverberated across Europe, prompting urgent questions about the continent’s security strategy.
While most French parliamentarians expressed solidarity with Ukraine, divisions emerged over how best to respond. Bayrou emphasized the need for a stronger European defense framework, arguing, “We Europeans are strong, and we don’t know it; we behave as if we were weak. If we are strong, it is up to us to guarantee Europe’s security and defence, especially in an emergency where Ukraine cannot be left undefended.” His call for European unity was met with applause from some quarters, including the Green Party and Socialist Party, which aligned with the government’s pro-Ukraine stance.
