Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of murdering George Floyd, was stabbed by another inmate and seriously injured on Friday at a federal prison in Arizona, according to multiple media sources.

Chauvin, who is serving a 22 ½-year sentence for killing Floyd by kneeling on his neck for more than nine minutes, was attacked at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, a medium-security facility that houses both male and female inmates.

Sources told various media outlets that Chauvin was stabbed with a makeshift weapon and suffered wounds to his chest and abdomen. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition.

The identity and motive of the assailant are not yet known, but authorities are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.
