A German citizen was the victim of a robbery in Lahore, leading to the arrest of four police personnel of ‘dolphin force’ who were found guilty of criminal negligence and failing to prevent the criminal gang responsible for the crime.
The incident took place in Lahore, where the German tourist was approached by a group of criminals who robbed him of his belongings. The foreign tourists were beaten and deprived from his cameras, mobile phones and other values belongings. After the videos German tourists distress went viral, Punjab’s police and other concerned authorities took action to save their reputation.
The arrests of the police personnel were made due to criminal negligence in their duty. In many cases, the police have been known to back various crimes and provide protection to criminal gangs operating under their supervision.
Pakistan has been trying to build its image as an attractive place for foreign tourists, but such incidents are a major setback in gaining the confidence of foreign visitors. A few months earlier,
some foreign tourists were harassed and beaten by Punjab police, and despite the viral footage, no action was taken by the higher authorities.
The German tourist looting incident highlights the need for rigorous internal oversight within law enforcement agencies to prevent such breaches of trust and ensure the safety of both residents and visitors in Lahore.
