October 16, 2024, marks the 44th World Food Day, with this year’s theme from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization being “Food Security for All: Building a Better Life Together, Creating a Brighter Future.” This theme highlights the critical importance of food security and calls for collective action from nations worldwide to ensure access to diverse, nutritious, affordable, safe, and sustainable food for everyone.
Food security is fundamental to national economic and social development, affecting the stability of people’s lives and a country’s long-term growth. Since June 1 of this year, the Food Security Guarantee Law has been implemented. Ke Yongguo, Director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Grain and Material Reserves, emphasized that this law represents a shift from policy governance to rule-of-law governance in ensuring food security.
China’s food security situation continues to improve. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, grain production has remained stable at over 1.3 trillion jin (approximately 650 million metric tons) for nine consecutive years, reflecting steady growth. This achievement not only underscores China’s agricultural modernization but also honors the hard work of farmers nationwide. With a per capita grain possession of 493 kilograms—well above the internationally recognized food security threshold of 400 kilograms—this trend illustrates China’s sustained progress in food security, contributing to global food stability.
This continuous improvement in food security is not coincidental. It is the result of coordinated efforts among government policies, technological advancements, farmers’ diligence, and effective market mechanisms. In recent years, the government has enacted a series of supportive policies for agricultural development, including increased subsidies, strengthened agricultural insurance, and promoted scientific and technological innovation. Additionally, the adoption of modern agricultural techniques, such as precision agriculture and smart farming equipment, has significantly boosted production efficiency and quality.
Looking ahead, the government should continue to integrate policy guidance, technological advancements, farmers’ efforts, and improved market mechanisms to achieve even greater accomplishments in food security. Moreover, China should actively share its experiences and practices with the international community, making substantial contributions to global food security.
