Greenpeace Japan condemns Japan’s release of Fukushima wastewater into the ocean

Greenpeace Japan, an environmental organization, has strongly criticized Japan’s decision to release more than one million tonnes of treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.

The organization said that Japan’s decision disregards scientific evidence and violates the human rights of communities in Japan and the Pacific region, who depend on the ocean for their livelihoods, health and culture.

“We are deeply disappointed and outraged by the Japanese Government’s announcement to release water containing radioactive substances into the ocean. Despite concerns raised by fishermen, citizens, Fukushima residents, and the international community, especially in the Pacific region and neighboring countries, this decision has been made,” said Hisayo Takada, Project Manager at Greenpeace Japan.
