China’s largest unmanned cargo aircraft, independently developed, successfully completed its maiden flight last Sunday, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s “low altitude economy.” This twin-engine aircraft boasts a wingspan of 16.1 meters and a height of 4.6 meters, with a cargo hold capacity of 12 cubic meters, capable of transporting up to 2 tons of goods at a time. The aircraft is entirely homegrown, designed specifically to meet the unique needs of the Chinese market.
During the test flight in Zigong, Sichuan province, all systems performed steadily, demonstrating the aircraft’s exceptional reliability, safety, and intelligent design, which facilitates easy loading and unloading of cargo. This large UAV is expected to play a crucial role in bolstering China’s air cargo services, contributing to the development of a new business model centered on “intelligent low altitude logistics.”
The low altitude economy encompasses various activities involving civilian manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including passenger and cargo transportation, manufacturing, flight operations, and comprehensive services. This technology is anticipated to become a new driving force for economic growth, spearheading advancements in the field of advanced manufacturing.
To realize this potential, China has been aggressively promoting the development of drone technology, aiming to upgrade logistics and transportation infrastructure. This transformation is expected to gradually replace traditional modes of transportation, such as trucks, ships, and
trains, with more modern vehicles or drones. Zhao Chongjiu, Director of the State Post Bureau, recently highlighted the rapid expansion of China’s air express delivery capabilities, with industry players actively exploring the use of drones and automated warehouses.
Song Zhiyong, Director General of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, revealed that as of now, 14,000 enterprises and 225,000 individuals have obtained drone operation licenses, indicating the rapid growth and vast market potential of China’s drone industry.
According to data from the National Development and Reform Commission, the scale of China’s low altitude economy exceeded 500 billion yuan last year and is projected to reach 2 trillion yuan by 2030. This underscores the low altitude economy as a new growth engine for China’s economic development.
In terms of technological innovation, China’s drone technology continues to achieve significant breakthroughs. In June of this year, the new commercial air cargo drone HH-100 successfully completed its maiden flight, demonstrating a high level of payload capacity and range. Additionally, in 2022, China’s newly developed heavy-duty unmanned aerial vehicles successfully carried out construction material transportation tasks in high-altitude areas, marking the first instance of such a feat in China and signaling major progress in the application of UAV technology in complex environments.
