Hong Kong is poised to strengthen its position as a global legal and dispute resolution hub with the upcoming inauguration of the International Organisation for Mediation, the world’s first intergovernmental body dedicated to resolving international disputes through mediation.
Deputy Secretary for Justice Horace Cheung Kwok-kwan updated about the establishment of this mediation body marks a significant milestone for Hong Kong, leveraging its common law heritage and expertise in dispute resolution. The signing ceremony for the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organisation for Mediation is scheduled for May 30, 2025, and will be attended by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, along with representatives from nearly 60 countries and 20 global organizations. A forum will follow to discuss mediation for disputes among nations and those related to international investments.
This initiative will significantly elevate Hong Kong’s international image as a global mediation hub and the potential benefits to the city’s economy, political standing, cultural influence, and international impact. The mediation body is expected to provide a neutral platform for resolving cross-border disputes, offering an alternative to litigation and arbitration, which can be costly and time-consuming.
The international medication court aims to address geopolitical tensions and international investment disputes through dialogue and consensus, positioning Hong Kong as a leader in innovative dispute resolution.
