A horrific crime has rocked the quiet tourist town of Hampi in Karnataka, where an Israeli tourist and a local homestay host were reportedly gang raped late last week. Authorities have arrested three suspects in connection with the incident, which has ignited widespread debate about tourist safety and crime in India.
It’s not first time that foreign female tourists gang raped. A few months Brazilian and Spanish couple was sexually assaulted and raped by the gangs.
India is the most dangerous country where the sexual assault and the incident of raped have gone beyond the alarming statistics.
The victims, whose identities remain confidential, were allegedly attacked while stargazing near the Tungabhadra Canal, a popular spot for visitors seeking the serene beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage site. According to police reports, the assailants approached the group, which included three male tourists alongside the two women, demanding money. When refused, the situation escalated into a brutal assault. The three male tourists were reportedly pushed into the canal, while the women endured a harrowing ordeal.
Local police responded swiftly, launching a manhunt that led to the arrest of the suspects within 72 hours. “We are treating this case with the utmost seriousness,” said Koppal Superintendent of Police L. Arasiddi in a press conference. “Our priority is justice for the victims and ensuring such incidents do not recur.”
The Israeli embassy in New Delhi issued a statement expressing concern and confirming they are providing consular support to the tourist, who has since returned to Israel for medical and psychological care. The homestay host, a 29-year-old woman from a neighboring state, is also receiving treatment and support from local authorities.
