Indonesia arrests IS supporter over plot to attack police

Indonesian authorities have arrested a suspected Islamic State (IS) supporter who allegedly planned to launch an attack on the police’s security division headquarters.

The man, who worked for a state railway company, was detained on Monday in a raid on his house near Jakarta. Police found an IS flag, ammunition, and 16 weapons, mostly handguns and modified air rifles, in his possession.

The suspect had posted pro-IS content on social media and sought to raise funds for extremism via Telegram. He confessed to his intention to attack the police facility but did not reveal his motive or the timing of his plan.

Indonesia has been on high alert for extremist threats since 2002, when two nightclubs on Bali were bombed by militants, killing 202 people.

Analysts say the risk of IS-inspired attacks has decreased in recent years, but arrests of suspected radicals still occur occasionally.
