Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced today that the Strait of Hormuz is now “completely open” to all commercial vessels for the remaining period of a 10-day ceasefire linked to the Israel-Lebanon truce.
The announcement marks a significant de-escalation in the 2026 Strait of Hormuz crisis, which began when Iran effectively closed or severely restricted access to the narrow waterway following the outbreak of conflict with the United States and Israel in late February. The strait, a critical chokepoint between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, normally carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.
