Global Condemnation of Israeli Strikes
Israel’s unprecedented airstrikes, which targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities, including the Natanz enrichment plant, and killed senior military officials and scientists, have drawn sharp criticism from multiple countries. The strikes, described by Israel as a “preemptive” measure to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions, have been labeled by several nations as a violation of international law and Iran’s sovereignty.
Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry condemned the Israeli actions as “heinous attacks” and a “clear violation of international laws and norms,” urging the UN Security Council to intervene to halt the aggression. Similarly, Qatar denounced the strikes as a “flagrant violation of Iran’s sovereignty and security,” emphasizing the breach of international legal principles. The United Arab Emirates echoed this sentiment, calling for restraint to prevent further escalation, while Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani labeled Israel’s actions as “military aggression” that threatens global security.
Russia, a key ally of Iran, issued a strong condemnation through its Foreign Ministry, accusing Israel of violating the UN Charter and whipping up anti-Iranian “hysteria.”
Iran Invokes Article 51 of the UN Charter
In response to the Israeli strikes, Iran has formally invoked its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which allows nations to respond to armed attacks against their territory. Iran’s envoy to the UN Security Council, Amir Saeid Iravani, reported that the Israeli attacks resulted in 78 deaths, including senior military officials, and over 320 injuries, mostly among civilians. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israel of crossing “every red line” and described the strikes as a “declaration of war,” calling for an emergency UN Security Council meeting.
Iran’s Retaliatory Strikes and Regional Tensions
In retaliation, Iran launched over 100 drones and ballistic missiles targeting Israeli military sites, with explosions reported in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
