Iran launched a massive barrage of ballistic and hypersonic missiles targeting Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and other Israeli sites late Friday, in retaliation for Israel’s earlier airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and military command, which killed top commanders and scientists.
The Iranian operation, dubbed “True Promise 3,” overwhelmed Israel’s multilayered air defense systems, including the Iron Dome and U.S.-supplied Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), with reports of multiple direct hits causing significant damage and injuries.
Iranian state media claimed “hundreds” of missiles struck military bases, airfields, and strategic targets across Israel, including near Tel Aviv’s Mossad headquarters and the Dimona nuclear facility.
The Sirens and high alert warnings witnessed across many cities in Israel and several areas have prompted evacuations.
The failure of Israel’s Iron Dome and THAAD to fully counter the attack has raised concerns about the systems’ effectiveness against Iran’s advanced missiles. Experts note that hypersonic weapons and saturation tactics likely overwhelmed defenses, with each Iron Dome interception costing around $50,000 and THAAD missiles up to $2 million.
