Argentina’s President Javier Milei suffered a significant electoral setback on Sunday as his libertarian La Libertad Avanza party was defeated by the center-left Peronist Fuerza Patria coalition in the Buenos Aires provincial elections.
With over 86% of votes counted, Fuerza Patria secured 46% against Milei’s 34%, a wider margin than anticipated, signaling a challenge for his party ahead of the October 2025 congressional midterms.
The province, home to 40% of Argentina’s voters and a Peronist stronghold, was seen as a critical test of Milei’s popularity amid a bribery scandal and economic struggles. Analysts suggest this loss could weaken his push for radical economic reforms.
