Malaysia’s communications regulator has announced that it will take legal action against Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and WhatsApp, for failing to remove harmful content from its social media platforms.
According to the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Meta has not taken sufficient action to address the issue of undesirable content relating to race, royalty, religion, defamation, impersonation, online gambling, and scam advertisements, despite repeated requests from the agency.
The MCMC said that legal action is necessary to promote accountability for cybersecurity and enhance consumer protection.
Facebook has recently seen a significant volume of undesirable content on its platform, which could pose a threat to Malaysia’s social harmony and national security.
The MCMC urged the public to report any harmful or illegal content on social media platforms to the agency or the police.
