In a stunning recognition of her unyielding fight for democracy in Venezuela, opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the decision today, praising Machado’s “relentless courage in the face of authoritarian repression” and her role in mobilizing global attention to Venezuela’s political crisis.
The Nobel Committee’s citation reads in part: “María Corina Machado has embodied the power of peaceful protest and international solidarity in the struggle against oppression. Despite disqualification from elections, assassination attempts, and forced exile, her leadership has inspired millions and pressured the international community to address Venezuela’s humanitarian catastrophe.”Machado, 56, rose to prominence as an engineer-turned-activist, founding the opposition group Súmate in 2002 to monitor electoral integrity.
Her 2023 presidential bid, which saw her garner overwhelming primary support, was thwarted by the Nicolás Maduro regime, leading to her disqualification on dubious corruption charges. Undeterred, Machado coordinated mass protests and built coalitions across Latin America and beyond, earning endorsements from figures like U.S. President-elect figures and European leaders.
