Maui Wildfires: Death Toll Rises to 80 in Hawaii’s Worst Disaster

The Maui wildfires are now the deadliest natural disaster in state history, with a death toll of 80 as of Friday night.

Hundreds more are still missing and the toll may rise further. The cause of the fires is still unknown, but they were fueled by hurricane winds and dry weather.

The fires have destroyed more than 1,000 buildings in Lahaina, a historic town that attracts millions of tourists every year. Some residents were allowed to briefly return to their homes on Friday, but they faced a scene of devastation and despair.

The governor of Hawaii, Josh Green, said it will take many years to repair the damage and rebuild the community.
