In a pointed critique of U.S. trade policy, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum warned that the reimposition of tariffs by President Donald Trump could severely worsen inflation in the United States and lead to massive job losses.
The comments come amid renewed tensions between the two countries as Trump, now seeking another presidential term in 2024, has indicated a return to his “America First” policies, which included imposing tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and other nations.
Claudia Sheinbaum also cautioned that the economic fallout from escalating trade wars could lead to more job cuts and diminished purchasing power for US consumers.
While Sheinbaum remarks focus on the potential economic consequences for the US, they also underline the delicate relationship between Mexico and its northern neighbor, which has been historically shaped by trade agreements like the USMCA (formerly NAFTA).
Mexico is one of the United States’ largest trading partners, and a collapse in trade relations could impact both countries.
