In a significant move aimed at bolstering regional security, military leaders from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have signed a new pact amidst escalating tensions in the Sahel region. This agreement, signed in defiance of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) directives, emphasizes joint military operations to combat insurgent groups that have plagued the region for years.
ECOWAS had recently called for a return to civilian rule in the three countries, following military coups in Mali and Burkina Faso, and a constitutional crisis in Niger.
The new pact, however, asserts the military’s authority in addressing security challenges, dismissing external interference.
