In a significant escalation of tensions on the Korean Peninsula, the North Korean military has announced plans to completely cut off all road connections to South Korea. The decision was made public during officials cited “national security concerns” as the primary reason for the drastic measure.
A project will be launched first on October 9 to completely cut off roads and railways connected to” South Korea and “fortify the relevant areas of our side with strong defense structures,” the general staff of the North Korean People’s Army said in a report carried by the Korean Central News Agency.
The announcement comes amid heightened military activity and rhetoric between the two Koreas, with recent joint military exercises conducted by South Korea and the United States drawing sharp rebukes from Pyongyang. North Korea has consistently viewed these drills as provocative actions that threaten its sovereignty.
As a result of the blockade, several key transport routes, which have historically facilitated trade and communication between the two nations, will be rendered impassable. Analysts fear that this decision could further isolate North Korea and exacerbate the already strained inter-Korean relations.
