A woman in Pakistan’s Lahore faced a violent mob after she wore a shirt with Arabic words on it, which some people allegedly mistook for Quranic verses. The woman, who had gone shopping with her husband, was surrounded by an angry crowd who demanded her to take off the shirt. She was rescued by police officer who intervened and took her to safety.
The incident, which took places captured on video and went viral on social media. In the video, the woman can be seen sitting with her hands on her face in what appears to be a restaurant, as the mob rages outside. A woman police officer, identified as ASP Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi, can be heard asking the crowd to calm down and not resort to violence. She then escorts the woman out of the place and takes her into custody.
The incident has sparked a debate on social media about the rising intolerance and mob violence in Pakistan. Some users blamed the religious extremism and the lack of education for such incidents. Others questioned the legitimacy of the incident and suggested that it was a staged drama to divert the public attention from the political and economic issues in the country
