A gas leak at a barbecue restaurant in Yinchuan, the capital of China’s northwest Ningxia region, triggered a massive explosion that killed 31 people and injured seven on Wednesday night, according to state media and authorities.

The blast occurred around 8:40 p.m. local time on a busy street full of restaurants and entertainment venues, as people were gathering on the eve of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday.
More than 100 firefighters and rescuers rushed to the scene and completed the search and rescue work by early Thursday morning.
