Romania hosts summit to boost connectivity between 12 EU countries and partners

Romania is hosting a two-day summit in its capital, Bucharest, that brings together 12 European Union member states situated between the Baltic, Black and Adriatic Seas. The summit, which started on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, aims to improve interconnectivity in the transportation, energy and digital fields among the participating countries.

The summit is part of the Three Seas Initiative, a regional cooperation project launched in 2016 by Poland and Croatia. The initiative includes Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria, Estonia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Latvia and Lithuania.

The initiative states on its website that it “was born out of a shared interest in developing transport, energy and digital infrastructure connections on the EU’s north-south axis”. The initiative also seeks to enhance regional resilience and security amid Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and its influence in the region.
