Russian ministries have recommended to President Vladimir Putin the removal of the Taliban from the country’s terrorist list. Zamir Kabulov, the special presidential envoy for Afghanistan, stated that the Taliban government has made significant strides towards international recognition since its establishment in 2021.

The proposal, which comes from the Russian Foreign and Justice Ministries, suggests a shift in Russia’s stance towards the Taliban, which has been in control of Afghanistan since the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces. The removal from the terrorist list could be a precursor to Russia officially recognizing the Taliban government.

Kabulov highlighted that while the Taliban has progressed towards recognition, there are still several hurdles to overcome. The Russian leadership is expected to make a decision following a thorough review of the situation.
