Slovakia’s Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has appeared in public for the first time since surviving an assassination attempt on May 15. Fico addressed attendees at an event at Devín Castle in Bratislava, marking Saint Cyril and Methodius Day, a significant national holiday in Slovakia.
Making a single mention of the shooting as an “unfortunate event,” Fico largely focused his speech on societal challenges, specifically calling for a barrier against what he described as the spread of progressivism, likening it to a cancer.
The shooting incident occurred as Fico greeted supporters in Handlová, where he was reportedly shot five times by a gunman. The prime minister’s return to public engagements signals a step towards normalcy following the alarming attack that shocked the nation.
