A joyful festival in the city of Solingen in Western German turned into a scene of horror late last night as a brutal stabbing attack claimed the lives of at least three people and left five others injured.

The Festival of Diversity, marking the city’s 650th anniversary, began on Friday and was supposed to run through Sunday. Several stages in central streets offered attractions such as live music, cabaret, and acrobatics.
Solingen has about 160,000 residents and is located near Cologne and Düsseldorf.
