In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, Pakistani authorities have arrested thousands of protesters as Imran Khan’s supporters made a final push toward Islamabad, demanding his immediate release from imprisonment. The march, organized by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has been described as a “final call” to secure the freedom of the former Prime Minister, who has been in custody since 9 May 2023.
Tens of thousands of PTI supporters from across the country began their journey to the capital on Nov 24 and by today, the crowd had swelled to an overwhelming number as they heading towards Islamabad’s key entry points. The movement, spearheaded by PTI leaders, has been framed as a “decisive” moment for the party and its leader, with organizers insisting that this is their last attempt to pressure the government and judiciary into releasing Khan.
Clashes with Police as Tensions Mount
The march quickly turned chaotic as security forces attempted to block protesters from entering the capital. Police tried to stop protesters at various entry points from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province to Punjab. Police and paramilitary forces deployed throughout Islamabad, as well as at checkpoints along major highways, began arresting demonstrators who attempted to push through barricades. According to officials, more than 4,000 people have been detained so far, with authorities accusing them of participating in “illegal protests” and “attempting to incite violence.”
