President elect Donald Trump has expressed his growing frustration over the global movement to de-dollarize, issuing a stern warning to the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Trump said that any efforts by the BRICS to replace the U.S. Dollar in international trade would be met with severe retaliation, including a potential 100% tariff on their exports to the U.S.
Trump wrote. “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER. We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy. They can go find another “sucker!” There is no chance that the BRICS will replace the U.S. Dollar in International Trade, and any Country that tries should wave goodbye to America.”
Trump’s comments come amid increasing discussions within the BRICS nations about reducing reliance on the U.S. Dollar for trade, with some exploring the idea of a shared currency or using local currencies in transactions. While no concrete plans have been announced, these discussions have rattled some U.S. officials, who view the Dollar’s global dominance as a key pillar of American economic power.
Trump emphasized that any country that attempts to bypass the U.S. Dollar would face dire economic consequences, including losing access to the massive U.S. market.
