U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright moved Sunday to douse global jitters, declaring that President Trump’s surprise order to resume nuclear-weapons testing will involve zero nuclear explosions.
Wright explained: “These are not nuclear explosions… These are what we call noncritical explosions.” The drills will verify every component except the fission trigger—ensuring warheads can still “deliver the appropriate geometry” without ever going boom.
Critics call even subcritical tests unnecessary; the White House calls them “peace through strength.”
