In exchange, the U.S. released Khan Mohammed, a high-profile Taliban figure who was serving two life sentences in California for drug trafficking and terrorism charges. Mohammed’s conviction in 2008 made him a notable figure in the U.S. legal system, being the first person convicted under the U.S. narco-terrorism laws.
