Chinese President Xi Jinping landed in Macao on Wednesday afternoon to attend a series of events marking the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to Chinese sovereignty. The visit also coincides with the inauguration of the sixth-term government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).
Xi Jinping, who is also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, was warmly welcomed by a gathering of community representatives, students, and local officials at Macao International Airport.
Upon his arrival, President Xi delivered a brief speech at a welcome reception, expressing his appreciation for Macao’s achievements under the “one country, two systems” policy. He highlighted the region’s success in maintaining its unique identity while contributing to national development. Xi stated, emphasizing the importance of continued stability and prosperity in the region. He said that Macao has not only preserved its cultural heritage but has also cherished how ‘one country, two systems’ can work effectively.
This three-day visit includes an inspection tour and will culminate in the official ceremony on Friday, where he will attend the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland and oversee the inauguration of the new SAR government.
Macao, known for its vibrant mix of Chinese and Portuguese cultures, has seen significant economic and infrastructural growth since its return to China. The city has transformed from a colonial outpost to a pivotal hub for tourism and finance in the Greater Bay Area. Xi’s visit is expected to reinforce Macao’s role in this regional integration and highlight the central government’s commitment to supporting Macao’s further development.
The celebrations across Macao have been marked with extensive decorations, cultural performances, and a strong security presence to ensure smooth proceedings.
