A peaceful Sunday service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints turned into a scene of unimaginable horror yesterday when a gunman rammed his pickup truck through the front doors, opened fire on hundreds of congregants, and set the building ablaze, leaving at least four dead and eight wounded, authorities confirmed late Sunday.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, a U.S. Marine veteran from nearby Burton, Michigan, who served in Iraq from 2004 to 2008, drove his vehicle into the chapel around 10:26 a.m. local time during a crowded worship service. Armed with an assault rifle, Sanford exited the truck and began shooting indiscriminately, killing two people immediately—one at the scene and another who later succumbed to injuries at a hospital. He then reportedly used an accelerant to ignite a fire, claiming two more lives inside the burning structure.
