A massive fire broke out at a police facility in the Egyptian Suez Canal city of Ismailia early Monday morning, causing extensive damage and raising fears of casualties.
The fire started at the city’s security directorate, a sprawling building that houses several police departments and offices. Witnesses said they saw flames soaring from the complex and heard loud explosions. Some parts of the building appeared to collapse, according to unverified videos posted on social media.
Firefighters were dispatched to the scene but faced difficulties in controlling the blaze, which spread quickly due to the presence of flammable materials and ammunition inside the facility. According to witnesses some people were seen being brought out of the building, but it was not clear whether there were any injuries or deaths.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Some local media outlets speculated that it could have been caused by an electrical short circuit or some other reason. The Egyptian authorities have not issued any official statement on the incident yet.
