A holy shrine in Iran’s southern city of Shiraz has been targeted by a second deadly attack in less than a year, leaving at least one person dead and several others wounded.

According to state media, two gunmen entered the Shah Cheragh shrine, one of the most important in Shia Islam, through its southern gate on Sunday evening and opened fire on security staff and worshippers.

One of the attackers was arrested at the scene with an assault rifle full of ammunition.

The motive and identity of the assailants are not yet clear, but officials and state-linked media described the incident as a “terrorist” attack.

The same shrine was hit by a similar attack on October 26, 2022, when a lone gunman killed 13 people and injured 40 others before being killed by security forces. The ISIL (ISIS) armed group claimed responsibility for that attack, which it said was carried out by one of its “soldiers”.
