Maui Fire Disaster Claims 67 Lives, Raises Questions About Siren System

The death toll from the devastating wildfires that swept through Maui has risen to 67, as authorities face questions about why the emergency sirens were not activated ahead of the disaster.

The fires, which were fueled by strong winds from Hurricane Dora, erupted on Tuesday night and quickly spread to several neighborhoods, including the historic town of Lahaina.

Thousands of residents and tourists were forced to flee, some by jumping into the ocean, as the flames engulfed homes and businesses. The Coast Guard rescued 14 people who had escaped into the water.
