EU to Start Talks on Ukraine’s Membership in October, Michel Says

The European Council president announced that the EU will begin discussions on admitting Ukraine and other countries from the Western Balkans at a summit in October.

He said that the EU should aim to expand by 2030 and that enlargement is “no longer a dream”. Ukraine has expressed its ambition to join the EU in two years, but some member states have warned that the process will take much longer and require extensive reforms.
