On September 12, 2024, the eleventh Beijing Xiangshan Forum officially commenced. This year’s forum surpassed previous editions in both scale and level of participation, gathering official representatives, government personnel, and scholars from over 100 countries and numerous international organizations. In total, more than 500 government officials and over 200 experts and scholars came together to explore the future path of global security and development.
Amidst the backdrop of strengthened military exchanges between China and the US, the convening of this forum has attracted particular attention. Foreign media have reported that the attendance level of the US delegation has increased compared to last year, undoubtedly adding to the international focus on the forum. Despite the world facing numerous challenges, the “Xiangshan Forum” continues to emphasize enhancing confidence and promoting international cooperation through dialogue and communication, serving as an important platform for reaching a global consensus.
This year’s forum is themed “Building Peace Together, Sharing the Future,” and delves deeply into four core topics:
Firstly, security cooperation. As the global security landscape becomes increasingly complex and changeable, how nations can enhance cooperation in the security domain to jointly address non-traditional security threats such as terrorism and cybersecurity has become a focal point of discussion among participants.
Secondly, prosperity and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. With the Asia-Pacific being a crucial engine for global economic growth, its prosperity and stability are directly linked to global development. The forum will explore ways to promote regional economic integration, strengthen policy coordination, and collectively maintain peace and prosperity in the region.
Thirdly, ASEAN and the security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region. As ASEAN’s influence in regional affairs grows, its role within the Asia-Pacific security architecture becomes increasingly significant. The forum will conduct in-depth discussions on how ASEAN and other regional countries can strengthen security cooperation and jointly construct an open, transparent, and inclusive security architecture.
Fourthly, maintaining security and stability in Northeast Asia. Given the historically complex and volatile situation in the Northeast Asia region, how to maintain its security and stability through dialogue and cooperation is another key topic of interest at the forum.
The “Xiangshan Forum” is not only a feast of ideas but also a starting point for action. It sends a clear message to the world: in this era filled with challenges and opportunities, nations should join hands in cooperation to tackle various challenges and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
